A squirrel has been reported to be sick with a rare coronavirus in southern Alberta.

Alberta Public Health says the squirrel was found in an area of the province with a high prevalence of the virus.

Alberta Health said the squirrel had no symptoms and was isolated for testing.

The province said there is no reason to believe that the squirrel is linked to a person with the virus, nor that there are any cases in the community.

The Alberta Department of Health said it has not received any reports of squirrels becoming sick with coronaviruses.

The department said it will provide additional support to the Alberta Health Services Health Department if needed.

Alberta is in the midst of an outbreak of the coronaviral coronavirocholera that has sickened more than 1,000 people across the province.
