The man who was once the center of the “Nutty Professor” is now a Republican candidate for president.
And he says he’s not just being ironic.
In the film, which is directed by Jon Hamm, a Republican political operative named James Nuttall (played by Hamm) is a member of the Clinton administration’s “Nutting Club” — a group of mostly wealthy Democrats, including former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who also is a Republican and is the subject of the movie.
In this July 21, 2020 file photo, Donald Trump, center, meets with his son Eric in his office in New York.
Trump is not the only politician in the movie to be a member, though, as the film makes clear.
President-elect Donald Trump holds up a replica of the likeness of James Nutt in a mock courtroom during a campaign rally in Raleigh, N.C., in June.
Trump’s election has put him in the spotlight as a leader who is not afraid to call out the “tortured, exploited” working class and who can offer a vision for what the country could look like.
But the movie’s portrayal of Nuttall has left many Republicans and conservatives skeptical that he is the “true face of conservatism.”
While Trump has been critical of Trump and other Republicans for some time, many in the GOP have long dismissed the “nutty professor” as a caricature of the party’s base.
In fact, some have even suggested that he has been a Republican for years, something that critics have questioned, given that he was not elected to office until late in the process.
“The Nutting Club is a joke,” former presidential candidate Sarah Palin wrote on Twitter in October.
“It’s a Hollywood-made parody of what we are supposed to be.”
It’s true that Nuttall’s portrayal in the film was inspired by real life, with actors portraying Nuttall in real life and then using him as a fictional character.
But Nuttall himself has said that he did not get the idea for his portrayal of the nutty professor.
“I’m not going to make any statements,” Nuttall told Variety magazine last month.
“I’m a bit of a cynic, and I’ve always believed in conspiracy theories, but this was a movie and I was given a script, and that’s how I was put in the position.”
The film, directed by James Cameron and produced by Rob Reiner, does have a slight comedic edge to it.
The film’s star, James Franco, plays the nuttied politician, though he does so in a much more dramatic way than Nuttall.
In addition to the nutting club, Nuttall appears in the final episode of the film as a character who is portrayed by comedian Paul F. Tompkins, who was also a member in real-life.
In the scene where Nuttall tells Trump that he wants to “make America great again,” he actually says “Make America great in my name” instead of “Make AMERICA GREAT IN MY NAME.”
The movie also makes clear that Nutt is not alone in his opposition to Trump.
Several Republicans in Congress have said they will vote against Trump in the 2020 midterm elections, including Sens.
Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz, both of whom have been critical for not endorsing Trump, while at the same time supporting Clinton in the 2016 presidential race.
The nutty professors’ political allegiances have been a key part of the story.
Nuttall was an influential member of a group called the “Budgeting Club” in the 1990s that advocated for reducing government spending, including cuts to the military.
The group was a political vehicle for former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who went on to become a prominent Republican politician.
While Nuttall is not necessarily a member or adviser to Trump, the film shows that he views him as an adversary and, in some ways, as a villain.
“It’s the first time that I’ve been in the movies where I’ve seen a political figure that really thinks about the people that are under his thumb,” Nutt told Variety in October, while explaining why he thought Trump was a “toy” president.
“He thinks he’s in control.
But in fact, he is one of those people that is very much in control.””
The nutter professor” was directed by the Oscar-nominated Rob Reiners, who wrote and directed the original film and are producing a follow-up.
Reiner is also producing a comedy-drama based on the movie, which will be directed by his wife, Amy Reiners.
The Nutt brothers have been active in politics since their teenage years, and their political involvement has been well-documented.
The brothers have served on the boards of several companies, including the American Cancer Society and the National Cancer Institute.
